What is a tourist visa in Thailand and who needs one?

If you are visiting Thailand for tourism, you have two main options. The first is a visa-on-arrival stamp, which you get at the border without applying in advance. The second is a TR tourist visa, which you apply for at a Thai consulate before your trip. The stamp is easier and faster. The TR visa gives you more days and more flexibility. Which one is right for you depends on how long you plan to stay and how often you visit Thailand.

How many days do you get at the border in 2026?

Right now in 2026 the border stamp gives you 60 days. This rule has been in place for a while and is still working at every border checkpoint. However, the Thai government is actively discussing changing it back to 30 days.

The Prime Minister and the Minister of Tourism have both spoken about this publicly. Based on what we know today, the change is likely to happen around June 2026. If you are planning a long trip, do not wait — enter before the rule changes or apply for a proper TR visa in advance.

How much cash do you need when entering Thailand?

Since late 2025 this has become a standard requirement at Thai borders. You need to show 20,000 baht per person in cash, or the equivalent amount in any freely convertible currency such as US dollars or euros.

Border officers can and do ask for this, so keep the cash accessible. One important thing — having the cash does not replace your other documents. You still need a hotel booking and a return or onward ticket. All three together.

How many times can you enter Thailand per year?

Thai law sets a clear limit — tourists can stay in Thailand for a maximum of 180 days per year. This applies to everyone regardless of how they enter. It does not matter if you fly into Bangkok or cross a land border in the south. The total number of days you spend in Thailand during the year is what counts. Go over 180 days and immigration officers have the legal right to deny your entry. This rule comes from Article 157 of Thai immigration law.

Do you need to show a hotel booking at the border?

Yes. When you arrive at the border or apply for a visa, you need to show proof of accommodation. The address should match what you entered in your TDAC digital arrival card. If you are staying in multiple places, show the booking for your first stop — that is enough. If you are applying for a TR visa at a consulate and planning to stay longer than one month, showing a booking for just the first month is generally accepted in practice.

Does your return ticket have to go back home?

No. Thai immigration does not require you to have a ticket back to your home country. Any onward ticket works — to Malaysia, Vietnam, or any other destination. The point is simply to show that you have a plan to leave Thailand and that you are not intending to stay illegally. A booking to a neighboring country is perfectly fine and widely accepted at all borders.

Can you extend your tourist visa inside Thailand?

Yes, you can extend without leaving the country. A 60-day tourist visa can be extended one time for 30 additional days at any immigration office in Thailand. There is no third extension. If you need to stay longer after that, you will need to exit and re-enter, or apply for a different type of visa.
After that, if you still need more time, there is one more option — a second extension of 7 days only.

Do you need real flight tickets to apply for a visa?

No, you do not need to buy your tickets before applying. Thai consulates accept reserved but not yet paid tickets. This is intentional — it protects you financially in case your visa is denied. You can submit a booking confirmation or a reservation, not a fully purchased ticket. The same applies to hotel bookings. Once your visa is approved, you can then go ahead and pay for everything.

Where can you apply for a Thailand tourist visa?

You can apply in your home country at a Thai consulate or embassy. You can also apply in a third country if you are already traveling — for example in Vietnam or Malaysia. The important rule is that you must physically be in that country when you submit your application. You cannot apply at the Vietnamese consulate while you are sitting in Bangkok. You need to be on the ground there and wait for the result before you travel.

How does tourist visa activation work?

After your visa is approved and arrives by email, you will see a validity period — for example three months. This means you must enter Thailand within those three months to activate the visa. The moment you cross the border, the visa activates and you receive a 60-day stamp in your passport. You may notice the visa says 90 days — this is not a mistake. It means 60 days of stay plus 30 days that are already built in for a possible extension. The extension is not automatic, you need to go to an immigration office to get it.

What is METV and when does it make sense?

METV stands for Multiple Entry Tourist Visa. It allows you to enter Thailand multiple times over a period of up to 180 days. It sounds convenient, but the requirements are significantly stricter than a regular tourist visa. You need to show a minimum balance of 2,000 US dollars in your bank account at all times, plus a monthly income certificate from your employer, plus company registration documents if applicable. The review process is longer and more detailed. METV makes sense if you travel in and out of Thailand frequently and want to avoid applying for a new visa every time.

Can you change your visa status without leaving Thailand?

Yes. If you entered Thailand on a tourist visa or border stamp and your plans change — for example you find a job or enroll in a school — you can apply to change your immigration status without leaving the country. This means switching from tourist status to a work permit or student visa while staying inside Thailand. The process requires the right documents and needs to be done through Thai immigration, but it is legally allowed.
