What is DTV visa and who can get it

DTV (Destination Thailand Visa) is a long-stay visa valid for 5 years. Every time you enter Thailand you get 180 days. Entries are unlimited — you can exit and re-enter as many times as you want throughout the 5 years. The visa is fully electronic, no consulate visit required.

There are four types of people who can apply: freelancers, remote employees, people studying Thai culture or Thai boxing (Soft Power), and people coming for medical treatment. You can also add family members to your application.
  • Freelancer
Self-employed professionals. Requires the largest document package — contracts, client correspondence, proof of income. Often underestimated.
    1
  • Remote Employee
Working for a company outside Thailand. Requires employment contract stating remote work, company registration documents, and employment letter.
    2
  • Soft Power
Studying Thai boxing, Thai cuisine, Thai culture, or language. You still need to show where your income comes from.
    3
  • Medical
Based on medical treatment contracts with Thai hospitals or medical institutions. Family members can be attached to any of the four roles.

Documents you need for DTV Visa

The base package is for remote employees. Freelancers and other roles require additional documents. Everything must be in English

— Employment contract stating remote work
— Company registration documents
— Employment certificate with your position and salary
— Copy of ID of the person who signs your letter
— Bank statement for the last 3 months with wet stamp
— Rental contract for 180 days in Thailand including landlord phone number
— Flight itinerary to Thailand
— Photo 4×6 cm, white background
One important rule: your bank statement must not be older than 10 days at the time of submission. If your application gets delayed — get a new one.

What you can and cannot do?

Remote work
You can work remotely for companies outside Thailand. No problems, no restrictions.
Local work
You cannot work for Thai companies or be employed locally. This is a tourist visa category.
Open a company
You can register a company in Thailand. This is not connected to your visa type.
Open a bank account
Currently impossible. The Bank of Thailand does not allow foreigners with tourist status to open accounts. Use True Wallet or online banks instead.
Buy property
You can buy real estate in Thailand. Your visa type does not limit this.
Stay 5 years non-stop
Maximum 180 days per entry. Exit and re-enter to reset your 180 days. You can do this unlimited times over 5 years.

Processing time

Processing takes a minimum of 12 working days. It can stretch up to one month depending on how many applications the consulate is handling at that moment.

You cannot speed it up — the queue is electronic and assigned automatically.

If you are applying at a busy consulate, expect closer to a month. There is no way to check your position in the queue.

Why people get rejected?

  • Too many short-stay stamps
If you spent a lot of time in Thailand on tourist visas and stamp runs before applying, consulates notice this. It raises questions about your real intentions.
    1
  • Profile doesn't match the role
Many people apply as remote employees when they are actually freelancers. These are different roles with different document requirements. Getting this wrong leads to rejection.
    2
  • Weak financial documents
Bank statements that don't clearly show opening and closing balance for each month. Consulate needs to see that your balance stays above the minimum — if they can't see it, they reject or send a request for more documents.
    3
  • Documents not in English
Thai consulates accept only Thai or English. Any document in another language is simply not considered — except your passport.

How much does it cost

The consular fee is 11,000 to 15,000 Thai baht depending on the country where you apply. Each country sets its own fee — for example, Israel charges around 1,000 USD.

If you use an agency, the cost ranges from 35,000 to 75,000 baht depending on what documents you need and what the agency does for you. The price difference between agencies is not about quality — it is about what is included in the package.

Once you have the visa, you pay nothing for 5 years. No renewals, no extensions.
